Social media optimization is the process of increasing the awareness of a product, brand or event by using a number of social media outlets Social Reputation Management, Social Media Managementand communities to generate:

d. Authority in the Search Engines

While social media optimization is related to search engine marketing, it differs in several ways. Primarily, SMO focuses on driving traffic from sources other than search engines. Social media optimization is considered an integral part of Online Reputation Management (ORM) for organizations or individuals who care about their online presence. Social Media Optimization is not limited to marketing and brand building. Increasingly, smart businesses are integrating social media participation in areas such as product/service development, employee recruiting, employee engagement, brand building, customer relations, business development and even B2B relationships.

Most importantly however, social media optimization should be implemented to solidify a healthy business-to-consumer (B2C) relationship.

Social Media Optimization has become increasingly important for search engine optimization, as search engines are increasingly utilizing the recommendations of users of social networks such as Facebook, Twitter, and Google+ to rank pages in the search engine result pages. The implication is that when a webpage is shared or “liked” by a user on a social network, it counts as a “vote” for that webpage’s quality. Search engines then utilize these votes to rank websites in search engine results pages. Furthermore, since it is more difficult to tip the scales or influence the search engines in this way, search engines are putting more stock into social search.

 

2. Social Media Management

Not every social network is right for every client. Take for example Target, Google and CNN. Whereas Google focuses it’s SMO strategies primarily through Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Google+ ; Target also utilizes sites such as Pinterest and CNN utilizes Digg, Newsvine etc.

Choosing the right outlets and a consistent, correct message is vital.
